With Apple, Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Microsoft and Meta Platforms (Facebook), several Nasdaq heavyweights reported results last week. Overall, the positive sentiment continues, especially for technology stocks, and the bull market continues unabated. The Nasdaq 100 reached another all-time high on Friday (on a daily closing price basis).

Quarterly figures create a positive mood

One of the big winners last week was the Amazon Stock. Following the release of results on Thursday after the close, the stock opened Friday with a large gap up and maintained that price throughout the trading day, closing nearly 8 % above Thursday's close. Amazon beat expectations on both profit and revenue, thanks to its retail business and cloud division.

Amazon share (daily chart)

Also on Thursday after the close of trading Apple reported its results for the past quarter and exceeded expectations with total sales of USD 119.6 billion and earnings per share (EPS) of USD 2.18. The company performed particularly well with iPhones and Mac computers. There was a slight decline in iPad sales. Apple shares initially opened around 4 % lower on Friday, but were able to close the price gap again during the trading day and ended the day almost unchanged. With the downward gap, the share fell exactly to the price level of the important daily EMA 200, which was thus successfully defended.

Apple share (daily chart)

A look at the chart of the Meta Platforms share, it quickly becomes clear that the quarterly results must have been convincing here too. The share opened with a massive upward gap and closed at USD 474.99 on Friday, around 20 % above the previous day's closing price and at a new all-time high. This was not only due to the equally positive earnings and sales figures. Meta also announced an increase in its share buyback program by USD 50 billion and initiated a quarterly dividend of USD 0.50 per share.

Meta's advertising revenue amounted to 38.7 billion US dollars in the fourth quarter and the number of daily active users on Facebook is 2.11 billion. Meta's Reality Labs division, which focuses on the development of the Metaverse, continued to record losses, with a loss of 4.65 billion US dollars in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, revenue from this division exceeded expectations.

Meta Platforms share (daily chart)

Nasdaq 100: Buy The Dip remains attractive

The Nasdaq 100 Index turned upwards on Thursday and Friday of last week after a moderate correction to the daily EMA 20 in the first half of the week. The overarching upward trend is intact and the bullish momentum continues.

Nasdaq 100 (daily chart)

Even if the index is already trading at overbought levels, one should not position oneself against the market in such a strong trend. The more successful strategy is to wait for corrections and then jump on the overriding upward trend. This can be done with directional trades in futures, ETFs or individual stocks, or also with put strategies such as cash secured puts or put credit spreads (bull put spreads).

In the event of a correction, the next support zone lies at around 17,000 points. This is the price level of the last local high of the upward trend from December. In addition, the daily EMA 50 will run into this price zone over the next 1-2 weeks.

In the event of an extension of the correction in terms of time and/or price, the weekly chart can be used to identify important technical support zones. The upward trend line of the current upward trend is interesting here, especially if it coincides with horizontal support zones and important moving averages.

Nasdaq 100 (weekly chart)

Technology shares continue to lead the way

The relationship line between the Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500, which was discussed in more detail in the last Nasdaq 100 analysis on January 8, continues to signal an upward trend, i.e. an outperformance of technology stocks relative to the S&P 500.

Relation line (Nasdaq 100:S&P 500)

As long as this upward trend continues, investments in tech stocks remain attractive and setbacks represent potential buying opportunities. In addition, the relationship line correlates with the S&P 500 and is therefore an important indicator for the further development of the broad equity market.

Author: Tobias Schmid
Date: 05.02.2024

Lieber Trader, liebe Börsenfreunde.
