The technology index is now only a few points below its all-time high, which was reached in July. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones also ended the week on a positive note and, unlike the Nasdaq 100, reached new highs. The bull market is thus continuing unabated.

Consumer prices slightly above expectations

After the non-farm payrolls published for September at the beginning of the month indicated a very robust US labor market and created a positive mood among investors, the consumer price index was the main focus last week. The US Federal Reserve and its Chairman Jerome Powell recently announced that the fight against inflation had been successfully concluded and that the focus should now increasingly be on the labor market.

These statements were primarily intended to counteract investors' fears of an economic downturn and a rise in unemployment, following signs of a slowdown on the labor market in July and August. Following the very strong September data, however, this danger has been put to rest, at least for the time being, and there were fears that the inflation data could be hotter than expected, partly due to the strong labor market.

With an inflation rate of 2.4 % in September compared to September last year, the CPI data published on Thursday was actually slightly above consensus expectations of 2.3 %. If the labor market remains very robust and inflation rises significantly again, this increases the likelihood that the Fed will slow the pace of interest rate cuts somewhat or hold off on further rate cuts.

However, the stock market reacted very calmly to the latest CPI data. Even though these were slightly above expectations, the trend towards the 2% target continues. In addition, a number of central bankers have spoken out in advance and confirmed that the Fed expects inflation to fall further and that further interest rate cuts will follow.

Consumer Price Index of the USA (YOY)

Rising momentum

The Nasdaq 100 Index has recently risen for five consecutive weeks. In the coming days, it should be decided whether the index can break out directly to a new all-time high or whether it will first undergo another correction. If there is a short-term correction, this would provide another opportunity for long trades out of the correction. In the event of a direct breakout to a new high, it would be worth waiting for a pullback.

Nasdaq 100 Wochenchart

On the daily chart you can see that the Nasdaq recently broke out of the correction formation (triangle). A clearly visible new secondary uptrend has already formed. This represents the movement phase of the overriding primary uptrend. The divergence of the EMA 20 (purple) and the EMA 50 (green) also signals a renewed increase in momentum, which is also a positive signal and suggests a continuation of the trend.

Nasdaq 100 daily chart

Author: Tobias Schmid
Date: 14.10.2024

Liebe Trader, liebe Börsenfreunde.
