Following Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election on Tuesday night, the stock markets were quick to react. US futures began to rise as soon as the votes were counted during the night. The Nasdaq 100 reached a new all-time high during the course of Wednesday, as did the Dow Jones and the S&P 500. The Russell 2000 achieved the largest percentage increase of the four major US indices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Bullish record volume<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Nasdaq 100 Index closed 2.7 % higher than the previous day at 20,781 points on Wednesday, reaching a new all-time high. It is worth noting that this strong rise took place under very heavy volume. The daily volume bar is the largest upward volume bar of the year. On Thursday, too, there was follow-up buying under above-average volume and the weekly chart thus also shows one of the strongest volume bars of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Seasonal tailwind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Buying under such high volumes is a strong bullish signal and indicates a medium-term trend continuation. Should there be another correction and a retest of the breakout level at 20,500 - 20,600 points over the next few days or weeks, this would provide another opportunity for bullish positioning. In addition, the stock markets are currently receiving a seasonal tailwind. November was the second strongest month for the Nasdaq 100 in the last 20 years after August, with the technology index rising in 75 % of all cases and an average performance of 2.2 %.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Tesla share with short squeeze<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With a rise of 29 %, Tesla was the strongest stock in the Nasdaq 100 last week. On the one hand, the Republican election victory was a driving factor for the electric car manufacturer's share price. As Elon Musk strongly supported Donald Trump's election campaign and Musk is also likely to play an important role in Trump's core team, Tesla shares are benefiting to a certain extent from psychological momentum and the prospect of favorable political conditions thanks to Elon Musk. On the other hand, Tesla recently published very strong quarterly results and the share broke out of a broad consolidation formation on Wednesday, triggering a kind of chain reaction and forcing short sellers to liquidate their positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Sector rotation and market breadth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of the total of 100 stocks in the Nasdaq 100, 79 stocks closed last week with a gain, while 21 stocks suffered a loss. Compared to the Nasdaq 100, a look at the Advance Decline Line of the New York Stock Exchange shows that the overall market breadth was positive, but not quite as strong as one might expect in such a bullish market environment. The reason for this was a strong sector rotation. In addition to technology, the strongest sectors last week included financials, industrials, energy and consumer cyclicals (non-consumer staples). Defensive sectors such as utilities, consumer staples and healthcare were somewhat weaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
