Dear traders, dear stock market friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a drop of 9.8 %, the Nasdaq 100 experienced one of its weakest weeks in a long time. The announcement of new tariffs by the US government by Donald Trump on Wednesday evening was followed by a massive and panic-like sell-off on the global stock markets on Thursday and Friday. The uncertainty continues and hardly anyone can predict what the coming weeks will bring. Waiting and watching events from the sidelines is often the best strategy in such exceptional situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Massive sell-off after announcement of tariffs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cautious optimism initially prevailed at the start of the past trading week: strong economic data (including a surprisingly solid ADP labor market report with +155,000 new jobs vs. 120,000 expected) and better industrial production figures supported sentiment. Investors hoped that the new tariffs threatened by US President Trump would serve more as a negotiating tactic (\"Liberation Day\") and would not be rigorously implemented. The Nasdaq 100 initially rose moderately between Monday and Wednesday, and index futures also initially reacted positively at the start of Donald Trump's speech on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this confidence changed abruptly when Trump conjured up a large board showing the amount of tariffs imposed by individual countries. The US president announced a comprehensive tariff package that exceeded the markets' worst fears. This triggered a global wave of selling. On Friday, China in turn announced retaliatory tariffs on US imports, which further depressed sentiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 came under heavy pressure and slipped to its lowest level since September 2024 over the course of Thursday and Friday. In just two trading days, the index lost over 10 % in value. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones were also unable to escape the downward pull - on Friday, all three leading US indices hit new lows for around 11 months. Overall, the Nasdaq 100 thus recorded one of its worst weeks since 2022, underlining the shock effect of the events, and is now 21.7 % below its all-time high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VIX at its highest level since 2020<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The full extent of the panic can be seen by looking at the VIX. On Friday evening, the volatility index closed at 45.31 points, its highest weekly closing price since the coronavirus crash in March 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you can see on the following daily chart, the Nasdaq 100 is currently in a virtual free fall. The downward trend is now also clearly visible (sequence of falling lows and falling highs) and is in an advanced phase of movement.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How long the sell-off will last and how far the downward trend will continue is difficult to estimate with any degree of certainty at present. Due to the panic and politically driven markets, it also makes little sense to focus on technical support levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the heavily oversold market, a technical countermovement is possible at any time, but a sustained trend reversal will require substantial positive developments on the political stage. As long as the downward trend continues and there are no signs of a reversal of the primary trend, there is a risk that prices will continue to fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For long-term investors, the sharp fall in share prices could already offer initial buying opportunities in many places. Many of the big tech stocks are trading 20-30 % below their highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
