In addition to the current uncertainties regarding US monetary policy and concerns about the bursting of a possible AI bubble, fluctuations on the stock markets are likely to remain high.

What is a „short call“ and what needs to be considered?

Under a „Short Call“ is the sale of a so-called call option.

The seller of a „short call“ receives an option premium from the buyer and in return undertakes to sell the security (underlying) at a predetermined price. This can take place at a fixed time or at any time up to expiry - depending on whether it is a European or US option, the option buyer should make use of his right to buy the underlying.

However, it should always be noted that a „short call“ is a at the same time (theoretically) unlimited loss potential entails. Against this backdrop, disciplined risk and capital management is absolutely essential.

„Covered call“ as a possible strategy

Another popular strategy is the so-called „Covered calls“ (covered call option), where the investor already holds the underlying asset in the portfolio. The combination of a long position and a short call ensures that the unlimited loss potential no longer exists. If the underlying is „in the money“ on the expiry date, only the long position held is sold.

Worth knowing: In practice, a so-called „naked call“ is when a short call does not occur in combination with other options or positions.

Essentially, the investor is betting that the underlying will not exceed the strike price of the option on the expiry date.

Partial US budget dispute settled - investors now fear possible flood of economic data

Following the settlement of the partial budget dispute in the United States in mid-November, investors are now faced with a veritable flood of data and thus potential concerns that the US economy is in a worse state than expected.
From October 1, the United States was in a partial shutdown that lasted a total of 43 days and paralyzed numerous government agencies. The main point of contention in the budget dispute was healthcare. However, the transitional budget that was passed only applies until the end of January 2026. During the shutdown, some civil servants had to stop working. In this context, the necessary data, for example for inflation and the US labor market data (Non-Farm Payrolls). The NFPs for the months of October and November should be published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on around December 16 and thus only after the final Fed meeting of the current year.

The economic uncertainties could therefore tend to persist in view of the lack of economic data.

Developments in US monetary policy are likely to remain one of the key topics of discussion not only until the end of the year, but also beyond 2026. Fed meetings are planned for December 10, 2025, January 28 and March 18, 2026. Whether there will actually be further interest rate cuts remains questionable.

Ukraine-Russia conflict still in focus: Hope for a breakthrough in peace negotiations

Developments in the Ukraine-Russia conflict are also expected to have an impact on the oil price (WTI). Hopes of a breakthrough at the peace negotiations in Florida at the end of November 2025 could remain high. Following the negotiations with Ukraine, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that the war could be ended.

Oil (WTI) Futures

Summary: Options as a possible instrument in volatile markets - with risk

In a stock market environment characterized by macroeconomic challenges and political uncertainties, the so-called „short call“ could be an opportunity to bet on prices moving sideways or falling slightly.

In particular, the current developments in US monetary policy, the budget dispute and the associated effects and after-effects could influence the oil price in the coming weeks and months.

In any case, it should be noted that the risk for uncovered positions is unlimited.

In Zeiten erhöhter wirtschaftlicher Unsicherheit und volatiler Märkte könnte die gezielte Nutzung von Optionsstrategien wie dem „Short Call“ an Bedeutung gewinnen.
