Since the beginning of the year, the Dow is up around 3%, signaling relative strength against the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100. On the macroeconomic side, the focus last week was on labour market and inflation data in particular.

US labor market stronger than expected

Last Wednesday, the Non-Farm Payrolls for the month of January were published (belatedly). US employment rose by 130,000 jobs, which was significantly more than the consensus expectation. At the same time, the unemployment rate fell to 4.3%.

On the one hand, a robust labor market supports the „soft landing“ narrative; on the other, it reduces the pressure for rapid interest rate cuts, which weighs on the valuation of interest rate-sensitive and highly valued growth segments in particular.

Weekly initial applications for unemployment benefit also remained low by historical standards (227,000), while subsequent applications rose slightly (1.862 million).

This continues the picture of a moderately cooling labor market, which does not mean acute stress for the Fed, but is enough to keep the prospect of easing later in the year alive.

Inflation cools down

The second important “macro event” last week was US consumer prices, which rose by 0.2 % in January on a MOM basis. Annual inflation came in at 2.4 %, both below market expectations and lower than feared.

The initial market reaction was a classic „risk-on“: falling yields and the hope that interest rate cuts would remain realistic over the course of the year. However, the reaction of the Dow and the stock market was rather muted in the end. Although the market is pricing in higher chances of a first cut in the summer, a negative sign remained at the end of the week.

Strong profit growth continues

Meanwhile, the Q4 reporting season is still in full swing and is certainly providing a fundamental tailwind. According to FactSet, 74% of the S&P 500 companies had reported by February 13. Of these, 74% reported EPS above estimates. In total, earnings were 7.2% above expectations (close to the historical average).

At the same time, FactSet's earnings material for Q4 2025 shows a blended earnings growth rate of 13.2% (until then).

There were also important results in the Dow:

McDonald's surprised with robust sales and exceeded profit expectations (value focus attracted customers).

Coca-Cola missed expectations in terms of sales and gave a rather cautious outlook for organic growth in 2026.

Cisco Systems beat estimates, but the margin/guidance discussion caused selling pressure.

This fits in well with the overall market sentiment: it is not the „beat“ that is decisive, but the outlook.

Relative strength of the Dow Jones Transportation Index

From a chart perspective, the upward trend in the Dow remains perfectly intact. Last week's correction ended in the area of the daily EMA 20 and the short-term support at around 49,500 points.

Dow Jones daily chart

In addition to the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Dow Jones Transportation Average (transportation index) is also a very important underlying for chart technicians. According to classic Dow theory, a signal is only considered confirmed if it occurs in both the industrial index and the transportation index.

Over the years, the anticipatory role of the transportation index has proved particularly useful. In recent weeks and months, we have again seen the transportation index take on a leading role, which is a very bullish signal for the broad market.

In the following daily chart of the transportation index, you can see a relationship line below the chart where the transportation index is divided by the industrial index. The rising line signals the relative strength of the transportation index. The chances of a medium-term trend continuation are therefore comparatively good, both fundamentally and in terms of the chart. Setbacks therefore primarily represent opportunities for a new entry or for bullish trades.

Dow Jones Transportation Index Daily Chart

Author: Tobias Schmid
Date: 16.02.2026

Liebe Trader, liebe Börsenfreunde.
