The outcome of the US Federal Reserve meeting in particular could decide the weal and woe.
Important economic data on both sides of the Atlantic are also on the agenda, which could help to decide whether the recent stock market rally will continue and thus whether the year will end with a spurt.

Impulses from China data and US economic figures possible at the start of the week

New economic data from China should provide important guidance on Monday. In addition to industrial data, retail sales are likely to be of interest (03:00).
On Tuesday, the focus will be on US retail sales data (14:30).

Investors bet on a quarter percentage point Fed rate cut - Powell speech could make a difference

The Fed meeting scheduled for Wednesday is likely to cast its shadow in the first half of the week. The key interest rate decision is expected at 20:00. Economists expect a rate cut of 25 basis points to a range of 4.25 to 4.50 percent.
The CME Group's "Fed Watch Tool" currently estimates the chance of this scenario at 96 percent.

The subsequent press conference with Jerome Powell (20:30) is likely to be even more important. Investors are hoping for clues about the future shape of monetary policy, in particular the extent and speed of further interest rate cuts.
The interest rate projections announced in September still held out the prospect of a total of four interest rate cuts in 2025.

Bond market signals more cautious rate cut cycle due to Trump policy

With rising yields last week, the bond market signaled that the Fed's interest rate decision may initially be followed by a more relaxed approach to interest rate cuts. Particularly in view of the uncertainty surrounding the new US government under Donald Trump and an expected protectionist approach, inflation could tend to rise again.

US GDP and price data round off the trading week - monetary policy as a key influencing factor

On Thursday, the GDP growth rate for the United States (14:30) is also likely to provide important impetus. An annualized rate of 2.8% is expected compared to the previous quarter, after 3% in Q2.

At the end of the week, important price data awaits stock market participants in the form of the so-called PCE core deflator for personal consumption expenditure. Experts expect an increase of 0.2 percent compared to the previous month, after 0.3 percent in October. A weakening of price pressure could tend to alleviate inflation concerns and thus provide fertile ground for interest rate cut fantasies.

Last but not least, the publication of consumer confidence from Reuters/Uni Michigan at 16:00 rounds off the trading week.

One week before the Christmas holidays, things are likely to get exciting again on the stock markets.
