As expected, the US monetary authority did not change the key interest rate level, but did hold out the prospect of further interest rate cuts for the current year. In the conflict with the United States, the EU now wants to postpone the planned retaliatory tariffs until mid-April in order to open up space for talks, according to reports. Specifically, this involves tariffs on US goods such as jeans, whiskey and boats, which could be seen as a reaction to the punitive tariffs of 25% imposed on steel and aluminum.

Retail data in China and the USA on the rise - tariff uncertainty unsettles US consumers

At the start of the week, investors were initially preoccupied with important economic data from China. At 5.9% year-on-year, Chinese retail sales were above the forecast (5.3%), but below the previous month's figure (3.7%).

Meanwhile, retail sales in the United States showed the first signs of a recovery with an increase of 0.2% (compared to the previous month) after falling by 1.2% in January. This growth may have remained moderate as consumers fear the effects of Donald Trump's tariff policy.

ZEW Index posts strongest rise since January 2023 - financial package provides a boost

The ZEW index caused quite a stir on Tuesday after it recorded the strongest increase since January 2023 at 51.6 points (previously: 25.6 points). The background to the strengthening of the economy is the financial package from the CDU/CSU and SPD. The Bundesrat also cleared the way for a billion-euro package today, Friday, after the Bundestag had already approved it with a majority on Tuesday.

Fed holds its feet still as expected - further interest rate cuts in 2025 not ruled out

As expected, the US Federal Reserve left the interest rate band at a range of 4.25% to 4.50% on Wednesday evening. However, the monetary watchdog expressed its willingness to ease further in 2025. However, they want to gain more clarity about the impact Donald Trump's tariff policy could have on the economy and inflation.

Finally, a speech by Fed representative John Williams (New York) will be held this afternoon (15:05).

Consumer confidence for the Eurozone will be published at 17:00.

RWE scales back investments - 2024 with profit decline

The energy group RWE (ISIN: DE0007037129) intends to invest less in the coming years than previously planned. The background to this is stricter risk management and higher expectations of returns. From 2025 to 2030, the company is now targeting 35 billion euros, around 10 billion euros (net) less than previously planned. In addition to regulatory uncertainties, the utility is faced with supply chain bottlenecks, geopolitical uncertainties and higher interest rates. Ebdita amounted to EUR 5.7 billion in 2024, compared to EUR 7.7 billion previously.

RWE

Source: TradingView

The last few trading days were characterized in particular by the Fed meeting in the middle of the week.
