In this way, one can protect oneself against slippage (an unfavorable change in the actual execution price of a market order). An IOC order (Immediate Or Cancel Order) fulfills these requirements by executing an order immediately, or canceling it if this is not possible. In this article you will learn how exactly an IOC order works and when its use can be useful.

What is an IOC Order (Immediate Or Cancel Order)?

The order suffix IOC (Immediate Or Cancel) specifies the order's Order validity of a buy or sell order and instructs the broker to execute an order immediately or, if this is not possible, to cancel the order immediately. Partial execution is also possible. In this case, part of the order is executed immediately and the rest of the order expires. In practice, order validity IOC is generally used for market orders or limit orders.

IOC Order (Immediate Or Cancel Order) in the TWS

With a market order, the broker is given the order to buy or sell an underlying immediately. The broker is given a free pass, so to speak, in that the order may be executed at any price, as long as the order is filled.

In less liquid markets or in the case of larger quantities, this can possibly lead to partial execution and the rest of the order being executed at a worse price.

Imagine, for example, that you want to buy 500 shares of a stock near the current market price at EUR 100 per share. In the order book you see that 200 shares are offered at an ask price of 100.50 EUR. With an IOC Market Order (number of shares 500) 200 shares are bought immediately at a price of 100.50 EUR and the buy order for the remaining 300 shares expires. In the case of a market order with the validity Day or Good Til Cancelled, there would also be an execution of 200 shares at 100.50 EUR; however, the rest of the order would not expire, but would also be executed immediately. If the next possible buy price is e.g. 102 EUR, the order would be executed at this price.

IOC Limit Order

In the example above (IOC Market Order), an IOC Limit Order could also have been used. With a limit price of 101 EUR, 200 shares would also have been executed immediately at a price of 100.50 EUR and the rest of the order would have expired. Thus, one would have been protected against a "more expensive" execution than 101 EUR per share, if the ask price had changed between the look into the order book and the transmission of the order.

A limit price of e.g. 98 EUR would have led to the order expiring, as it could not be executed immediately.

["post-45241","glossar","type-glossar","status-publish","hentry
["GET
