The biggest advantages are lower latency and download speeds up to 100 times faster than before. As with all new and potentially promising technologies, there will be companies that will benefit from the new wireless standard. Investors who want to invest in 5g stocks can focus on mobile operators as well as companies that provide the infrastructure, equipment and technology. In this article, we will introduce you to the 5G industry and a selection of different 5G stocks in more detail.

What is 5G?

5G is the fifth generation of mobile networks and represents an evolution of 4G. Compared to 4G, 5G offers significantly higher data transmission rates and lower latencies, making it an ideal technology for connecting IoT devices (Internet of Things, i.e., devices that are connected via the Internet).

In addition to improving performance, 5G also offers increased capacity and is capable of connecting more devices simultaneously. This is particularly important as more and more people rely on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, and thus more and more devices are connected to the Internet.

5G is also of great importance for the development of new technologies and applications and plays an important role in Industry 4.0, for example.

What role does 5G play in industry?

5G plays an important role in industry by enabling communication between machines and thus improving the efficiency of production processes. The high data transmission rates and low latencies of 5G enable machines to communicate with each other in real time and make faster decisions.

In Industry 4.0, which is based on the connection of machine intelligence and industrial processes, 5G will play a crucial role. It will help to increase the automation of processes and improve the efficiency of production facilities.

One example of the use of 5G in industry is the development of self-driving factory vehicles, which, thanks to 5G, are able to communicate in real time with other vehicles and machines and thus optimize transport processes in the factory.

5G technology also offers advantages for the monitoring and maintenance of machines by enabling the transmission of data in real time. By monitoring machines, failures can be detected at an early stage, thus minimizing downtime.

Overall, 5G offers many opportunities in industry to improve the efficiency of processes and develop new applications. Companies that are able to successfully use 5G technology in their industrial processes have good prospects for long-term success.

The industry looks positively to the future

The outlook for 5G stocks is positive overall, as demand for 5G technologies will continue to rise in the coming years. Especially in emerging markets where the roll-out of 4G infrastructure has not yet been completed, demand for 5G will increase strongly.

Demand for 5G will also continue to grow in industrialized countries as more and more companies look to take advantage of the technology to improve their production processes and develop new applications.

However, there are also some risks that need to be taken into account. For example, there are political tensions between different countries that can affect the rollout of 5G networks. The high investment costs for the expansion of 5G networks can also be a hurdle for some companies.

Overall, however, the sector offers many opportunities and is definitely attractive for long-term investors. However, it is advisable to minimize the risk by spreading the portfolio over several companies and sectors.

An important factor for the success of 5G stocks is also the company's ability to continuously adapt to changing market conditions and develop new technologies and applications. Companies that are able to adapt quickly and develop new business opportunities usually have better prospects in the long term.

The largest and best-known 5G stocks at a glance

Below you will find an overview of some of the currently most important companies in the 5G industry, followed by a more detailed introduction and brief analysis of some of the stocks.

Selection of well-known and large 5g stocks, sorted by market capitalization

Company

Symbol

Country

Market capitalization

Samsung

5930

South Korea

324.6 billion USD

ASML

ASML

Netherlands

USD 271.1 billion

Verizon Communications

VZ

USA

168.7 billion USD

Qualcomm

QCOM

USA

USD 148.4 billion

AT&T

T

USA

USD 137.2 billion

Intel

INTC

USA

USD 119.4 billion

German Telekom

DTE

Germany

109.1 billion USD

Vodafone Group

VOD

Great Britain

USD 34.4 billion

Nokia

NOKIA

Finland

USD 26.2 billion

Ericsson

ERIC-B

Sweden

USD 19.8 billion

Qualcomm

Company: QUALCOMM Incorporated

Symbol (TWS): QCOM

ISIN: US7475251036

Stock exchange: Nasdaq

Country: USA

Currency: US Dollar

Market capitalization: USD 148.4 billion

Sales (TTM) in USD: USD 43 billion

Qualcomm is a chip manufacturer based in San Diego, California. The company has benefited from the smartphone boom since the early 2000s, focusing on the technology behind 3G and later 4G mobile networks. The smartphone industry has now matured and sales are no longer reliably growing at double-digit rates. However, the 5G upgrade cycle should benefit Qualcomm significantly. The company has plenty of cash on its balance sheet to drive further hardware innovation and has been paying a dividend consistently for nearly two decades.

Qualcomm's product portfolio includes chips that enable 5G technology in all Internet Of Things (IoT) devices, such as industrial equipment, smartphones, cars, modems and other devices.

Brief analysis & outlook

Like the broad stock market, the Qualcomm share started the year 2023 with an upward movement and was able to rise from around USD 110 per share to a price level of currently over USD 130. A new upward trend was marked by overcoming the chart resistances at USD 128. In addition, the important 200-day line was bullishly broken.

After delivering strong earnings and revenue growth in fiscal 2021 and 2022, Qualcomm's quarterly results for the fiscal Q1 2023 just ended recently reported a drop in revenue and earnings. Compared to the same quarter last year, earnings per share decreased by 27 % and revenue decreased by 12 %. A difficult environment and macroeconomic weakness were cited as reasons for the decline, but the company is optimistic about the future in the medium term and expects demand to increase.

Ericsson

Company: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)

Symbol (TWS): ERIC.B / ERIC

ISIN: SE0000108656

Stock Exchange: Stockholm Stock Exchange / Nasdaq

Country: Sweden

Currency: Swedish krona

Market capitalization: SEK 205.7 billion / USD 19.8 billion

Sales (TTM) in USD: 26.1 billion

Stockholm-based Ericsson provides services, software and infrastructure in the field of information and communications technologies and already has a significant market share in 2G, 3G and 4G mobile network infrastructure. In 5g, Ericsson is also heavily invested, which could pay off if the 5g standard becomes established. Ericsson provides hardware and services to help telecom operators upgrade their networks to handle the speed increases of 5G technology. The company provides 5G networks on four continents, making it very well positioned for the 5g revolution. Ericsson is a profitable company and has paid a constant dividend in recent years.

Brief analysis & outlook

Ericsson also recently reported a decline in operating profit and weak quarterly figures overall, falling short of analysts' expectations. The downward trend, which has been ongoing since 2021, then continued and the stock is currently trading about 50 % below its 2021 highs, with operating margins falling sharply from 17.2 % to 10.5 %. Management has stressed that annual costs will be reduced by 9 billion Swedish kronor by the end of 2023, enabling the company to reach its target margin of 15 to 18 percent. Shareholders who do not want to reach for the falling knife can at least wait for a turnaround.

German Telekom

Company: Deutsche Telekom AG

Symbol (TWS): DTE

ISIN: DE0005557508

Stock exchange: XETRA

Country: Germany

Currency: EUR

Market capitalization: EUR 102.0 billion / USD 109.8 billion

Sales (TTM) in USD: 125.4 billion

After Deutsche Telekom's IPO in 1996, shareholders needed strong nerves. The media hype and the subsequent drop in the share price are still remembered by investors today, and the reputation of Deutsche Telekom's shares has suffered lasting damage. However, Deutsche Telekom is now one of the most important and largest telecommunications companies in Europe and has a good chance of benefiting from a possible 5g boom in the coming years. Telekom is one of four companies in Germany to have purchased the necessary frequency bands at auction.

Brief analysis & outlook

The Deutsche Telekom share has been in a stable upward trend since March 2022, which took the share to a new multi-year high at the beginning of 2023. At a price of around EUR 20, the share is trading at its highest level since 2001. The chances of the upward trend continuing are good. The company has a crisis-proof business model and the price targets of many analysts have also been raised recently. Earnings growth over the last three fiscal years has averaged 9.11 % and sales growth 13.26 %.

ASML Holding

Company: ASML Holding N.V

Symbol (TWS): ASML

ISIN: NL0010273215

Stock Exchange: Amsterdam Stock Exchange

Country: Netherlands

Currency: EUR

Market capitalization: EUR 254.0 billion / USD 271.8 billion

Sales (TTM) in USD: 22.7 billion

Based in the Netherlands, ASML Holding is a manufacturer of advanced semiconductor equipment systems, consisting of lithography, measurement and inspection systems. ASML operates worldwide and is considered a market leader, particularly in the field of lithography systems. The company's so-called extreme ultraviolet lithography systems are needed to produce advanced nanometer chips used in 5g devices. ASM Holding is thus ideally positioned to benefit from the 5g boom.

Brief analysis & outlook

The ASML Holding share marked a local low in October 2022 and has since gained more than 50 %, forming an upward trend with strong momentum and overcoming technical resistance levels. In the most recently published results for the fourth quarter of 2022, significant sales growth was reported and profits also rose slightly. In contrast to some other industry representatives, who have recently been concerned about the difficult macroeconomic environment, ASML Holding sees itself on course for growth in the new year, even if the risks are causing some uncertainty. "However, our customers are signaling that they expect the market to recover in the second half of the year," said ASML CEO Peter Wennink.

Als 5G bezeichnet man die fünfte Generation der drahtlosen Netzwerktechnologie.
