With the increase in demand for electric cars and other battery-powered vehicles, the demand for lithium has also risen sharply in recent years. Demand for lithium is also high for batteries in smartphones and other consumer electronics devices. Investments in lithium shares - or more precisely in companies that produce the metal - can therefore be a promising investment, as the demand for lithium will remain high in the coming years. However, new players have also entered the market to meet the rising demand, and lithium shares are often volatile and carry an increased risk. In this article, we take a closer look at the lithium sector and a selection of lithium stocks.

The importance of lithium as a raw material

Lithium is a chemical element that has a wide range of uses due to its unique physical and chemical properties. It is a so-called light metal and the third lightest element in the periodic table. Lithium is soft, silvery-white and very reactive, which means that it reacts easily with other elements to form compounds.

Applications of lithium

Due to its properties, lithium is needed in industry for many different applications.

Lithium-ion batteries

One of the most important uses of lithium is for the production of lithium-ion batteries. These are used in electric vehicles, portable electronic devices and energy storage systems.

The advantage of lithium-ion batteries compared to other battery types is a higher energy density, which means that more energy can be stored and, for example, electric cars can travel longer distances before they need to be recharged.

Energy storage

In addition to its use in electric vehicles, lithium is also used for energy storage, especially stationary energy storage such as solar storage and wind power storage. Energy storage is an important part of the energy transition, as it enables the integration of renewable energies into the power grid.

Aerospace

In addition, lithium is used in the aerospace industry because it is lightweight and corrosion-resistant. On the one hand, the metal is used to manufacture lightweight components and as a coolant in nuclear reactors. On the other hand, lithium batteries are also crucial for spacecraft, as they are able to store and supply energy for long periods of time.

Medicine

Lithium is also used in medicine, especially to treat bipolar disorder and depression. Lithium is a mood stabilizer and helps reduce symptoms of manic episodes and depression. In addition, there are some studies that suggest lithium may also be effective in the treatment of neurological disorders.

Overview of the lithium industry

The lithium industry includes companies involved in the exploration, development, production and processing of lithium. The world's largest lithium producers include countries such as Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Australia. Lithium production in these countries is mainly extracted from salt lakes, while in other countries lithium is mined from hard rock.

Growth trends and future prospects

Demand for lithium is expected to continue to grow strongly as more countries switch to renewable energy and more and more electric vehicles enter the market. The growth of the lithium industry is also driven by technological advances in battery technology that enable higher energy density and longer battery life.

Challenges and risks

The lithium industry is associated with various challenges and risks. These include regulatory risks, environmental and social risks, and commodity price volatility. As lithium production in some countries is associated with environmental problems such as water scarcity and soil salinization, political and social tensions may also arise.

The largest and best known lithium shares at a glance

In the table below you will find a selection of some of the largest and best known lithium stocks in the world, before we go on to present a selection of stocks in more detail.

Top 10 lithium stocks, sorted by market capitalization

Company

Symbol

Country

Market capitalization

Albemarle Corp

ALB

USA

USD 31.96 billion

Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile SA ADR B

SQM

USA

USD 24.63 billion

Ganfeng Lithium Co Ltd

1772

Hong Kong

USD 20.38 billion

FMC Corporation

FMC

USA

USD 16.15 billion

Tiangi Lithium Corporation

9696

Hong Kong

USD 13.05 billion

Mineral Resources Ltd

MIN

Australia

USD 11.38 billion

Allkem Ltd

LFS

Australia

USD 5.41 billion

Livent Corp

LTHM

USA

USD 4.33 billion

Lithium Americas Corp

LAC

Canada

USD 3.56 billion

Piedmont Lithium Ltd

PLL

Australia

USD 1.22 billion

Albemarle

Company: Albemarle Corporation

Symbol (TWS): ALB

ISIN: US0126531013

Stock Exchange: New York Stock Exchange

Country: USA

Currency: US Dollar

Market capitalization: USD 31.96 billion

Sales (TTM) in USD: 7.32 billion

Albemarle Corporation is a global provider of chemical and engineering solutions specializing in lithium, bromine and catalysts. The company was founded in 1887 and is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.

With a market capitalization of more than $30 billion, Albemarle is one of the world's largest lithium producers, serving customers in more than 100 countries. The company operates production facilities in North and South America, Europe and Asia and has a broad portfolio of lithium products, including battery materials, specialty chemicals and metal alloys. Albemarle is also committed to sustainable practices and works to minimize the environmental impact of its operations.

Brief analysis & outlook

Albemarle recently released quarterly results for the just completed fourth quarter. Earnings per share amounted to USD 8.62, which is more than eight times as much as in the same quarter of the previous year. Analysts' expectations (USD 8.19) were thus also significantly exceeded. Sales in the lithium segment increased massively and the company also expects sales to continue to rise in 2023.

As Albemarle was already able to achieve strong earnings and sales growth throughout 2022, the share reached a new all-time high as early as November, at a time when the broad market was still very weak. A correction was followed by a renewed upward movement from January 2023. The overriding trend is sideways. The P/E ratio is around 20 and is thus about 25 % higher than the average of the last 10 years.

Livent Corporation

Company: Livent Corporation

Symbol (TWS): LTHM

ISIN: US53814L1089

Stock Exchange: New York Stock Exchange

Country: USA

Currency: US Dollar

Market capitalization: 4.33 billion

Sales (TTM) in USD: 0.81 billion

Livent Corporation is a pure-play lithium company and is one of the top five lithium producers in the world. The Philadelphia-based company went public in 2018 after being spun off from FMC, as the latter wanted to separate its lithium business from its main agrochemicals business.

Brief analysis & outlook

Livent has also been a beneficiary of rising lithium demand, posting strong results in 2022 in particular. The company's stock is currently trading about 5 times higher than it was in April 2020 after the sharp drop. Like Albemarle, Livent shares did comparatively well in 2022 in the face of the bear market and are currently trending sideways. There is an important chart support zone in the area of around USD 19 per share. If this cannot be held, further price losses are imminent.

Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile

Company: Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A

Symbol (TWS): SQM

ISIN: US8336351056

Stock Exchange: New York Stock Exchange

Country: USA

Currency: US Dollar

Market capitalization: 24.63 billion

Sales (TTM) in USD: 8.66 billion

Another of the world's largest lithium producers is the Chilean chemical company Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile. Founded in the late 1960s, the company benefits from the fact that its home country has one of the largest lithium reserves in the world. In view of the rapidly growing demand in the electric vehicle industry, Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile has expanded its lithium production to include both main types - carbonate and hydroxide - which it extracts in the Salar de Atacama in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. The company also benefits from its production of potassium nitrate and iodine.

Brief analysis & outlook

Analysts currently expect that due to the increasing demand from China and due to the brownfield expansion in Chile, the chances are good that Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile can achieve an increase in the lithum business in 2023. Compared to its peers, the P/E ratio of 8 is relatively low. When looking at the chart of the Sociedad share, a high correlation in the price trend with the two previously presented lithium shares can already be seen at first glance, which is why the development of the entire industry should also be kept in mind when making an investment.

Pilbara Minerals

Company: Pilbara Minerals Ltd

Symbol (TWS): PLS

ISIN: AU0000PLS0

Stock Exchange: Australian Securities Exchange

Country: Australia

Currency: Australian dollar

Market capitalization: AUD 14.06 billion / USD 9.72 billion

Sales (TTM) in USD: 0.82 billion

Pilbara Minerals is a leading Australian mining company specializing in the exploration, development and production of lithium and tantalum minerals. The company was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in West Perth, Western Australia. Pilbara Minerals is committed to promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly mining practices and aims to support global demand for clean energy and electric mobility through the production of battery materials. The company operates the Pilgangoora mine in Western Australia, which is one of the largest lithium tantalum mines in the world and plays an important role in the battery materials supply chain.

Brief analysis & outlook

Pilbara Minerals' business is currently doing well. In fiscal 2022, the company generated A$1.19 billion in revenue, up from just A$176 million in 2021. Pilbara is pursuing a growth strategy and is loudly considering acquisitions and mergers. According to unconfirmed rumors, Canadian mineral exploration company Patriot Battery could be a possible takeover candidate. In terms of share price performance, a correction occurred in the first half of 2022, followed by a strong upward trend that saw the share price double and reach new highs. This was followed by another correction from October to December. The current local highs and lows (AUD 5.50 and AUD 3.50, respectively) represent two important chart price ranges. In case of a breakout above or below one of these marks, the probability is high that follow-on buying or selling will follow.

[78

post-15632","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trading-idee
["GET
