It offers a wealth of perspectives and portraits of many of the most important investors of our time. Michael O'Brien photographed a total of 33 personalities for this book. Each one speaks its own language and can be described as true art. Not without reason, many of his iconic photographs have already appeared in major American magazines and museums.

For a full 5 years, O'Brien traveled the world to gather these remarkably intimate portraits. They include famous investors such as Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, Mario Gabelli, Bill Ackman, Jean-Marie Eveillard and Bill Miller.

The first portrait O'Brien created for this book was of Charlie Munger. "He doesn't tolerate stupidity, so I was very worried," O'Brien recalls. "I just thought he might be very strict." To his relief, Munger turned out to be "kind and patient, almost grandfatherly". The portrait captures his intensity and concentration, "but it's not definitive. It doesn't summarize the whole Charlie Munger. It only portrays a part of him."

Michael O'Brien's photographs are accompanied by trenchant profiles written by William Green and several guest authors.

Over the course of two decades, Green has interviewed many legendary investors for magazines such as Fortune, Forbes, Money and Time, always coming back to one overarching question: What qualities and insights enable this elite group to achieve lasting success? In his interviews and writing for this book, Green explores the combination of talent, temperament, and strong principles that the greatest investors possess. The lessons that emerge from these rich accounts and elegantly written profiles may be sucked out in awe.

These lessons are both practical and profound. For example, when Green asks Irving Kahn for the most valuable financial advice he can pass on, the 108-year-old replies: "Safety. The most important thing an investor can do is to think about the risks. Francis Chou talks about separating yourself from the crowd and warns:

"If you want to participate in the market all the time, it's a sucker's game and you're going to lose." Explaining his amazing investment returns, Joel Greenblatt notes, "It's easier to find bargains off the beaten path or in unusual situations that other people don't have their eye on." Howard Marks notes that "the only constant is impermanence" and explains how important it is to understand that "you can't control the environment".

Beyond investing, the brilliant thinkers in this book also share many other lessons they've learned - for example, about family, faith, philanthropy, self-confidence, happiness, visualizing one's dreams, dealing with stress, surviving failure, the joys and perils of wealth, and what has given them the greatest satisfaction.

This book grew out of O'Brien's admiration not just for Buffett, but for the wider community of value investors to which he belongs. "They are iconoclasts and eccentrics," says O'Brien. "These people are all unique in character and temperament. They are outsiders in their view of the world." One of the most legendary of them is Irving Kahn, who was a friend of Benjamin Graham and worked as his teaching assistant in the 1920s. When O'Brien photographed him in Manhattan in February 2014, Kahn was 108 years old. He sometimes began to fall asleep between shots. Kahn's grandson Andrew would wake him up and try to keep his attention by chatting with him or asking him to tell the story of a stock he bought during the stock market crash of 1929.

A few weeks before work on this book was completed, Irving Kahn died at the astonishing age of 109. Thanks to O'Brien, we have a timeless portrait of him. What the viewer does not know is that Kahn is pictured at a moment when he is looking up at his grandson, who is standing outside the frame of the photograph. Kahn's suit seems a little too big for him. His hearing and eyesight are failing. But there is something sublime about him in this magical photo. "He looks regal," says O'Brien, "and he looks so alive, aware and focused. At that moment, he was just there.'"

A wonderful book that combines photography and life wisdom in a most special way and is both an absolute gem for any private library and a treasure trove of wisdom. It is a tribute to the greatest investors, their achievements and their ideas. And it is a timeless source of insight and inspiration. This book already holds a very special place with me and I will never let it out of my hands.

THE GREAT MINDS OF INVESTING by William Green (English Version) is a unique book.
