One reason is that spending in the restaurant industry tends to be highly discretionary and fluctuates wildly with the overall economy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, financial pressures on restaurants and restaurant chains increased as many struggled with rising costs, growing debt and declining sales. Although sales have recovered to some extent in the past year, restaurant owners are now struggling with inflation and the prospect of an economic recession. The restaurant stock industry includes small local businesses as well as large national and international corporations, with investors mainly interested in the latter. Although McDonald's is a member of the Consumer Discretionary sector - a cyclical stock sector - McDonald's shares can be seen as a rather defensive investment. The share price decline at the beginning of 2022 amounted to less than 20 %, while the broad market fell by more than 25 % in the period under review. McDonald's shares reached a new all-time high at the end of October, demonstrating impressive relative strength. This was despite the still difficult business environment in the restaurant sector due to high inflation. In addition, Domino's Pizza has been known for its delivery service for a long time, which is why it has been able to weather the past few years very well and record significantly increasing profits and sales. The company opened more than 600 new locations in 2020. Domino's stock fell from $560 to as low as about $300 in 2022, after the stock had risen sharply in previous years. Therefore, there are few opportunities for German investors to invest in restaurant stocks on the domestic stock market. HelloFresh is not a typical restaurant stock, but it is also active in the restaurant industry in a broader sense. The company offers cooking boxes for end customers that can be ordered online and include prepared ingredients and a recipe to cook yourself. Founded in 2011, the company was promoted to the DAX in September 2021, but moved to the MDAX a year later. HelloFresh has been profitable since 2020 and is also able to generate strong growth in sales. With many employees returning to local offices, Starbucks should benefit. The company was founded in 1971 and is headquartered in Seattle, Washington state. Starbucks is now the world's largest coffee chain and currently operates around 34,300 restaurants around the world. In addition to ordering directly in stores, Starbucks has evolved to offer drive-thru options as well as online ordering. The company owns and operates around 3000 restaurants in the USA, Canada and some European countries. As the name suggests, Chipotle primarily sells Mexican dishes such as burritos and tacos.
