At CapTrader you have the possibility to choose between the different account types cash account and margin account. Thereby there are different margin account types for you depending on your main residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should you have your main residence within the EU (EEA)<\/strong> you can choose between the two account types cash account and margin account when opening a deposit. (To the overview<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a main residence outside the EU (EEA)<\/strong> you can not only choose between cash and margin account, but in the case of margin account you can also choose between RegT margin account and portfolio margin account, if you meet the respective conditions for these account types. (To the overview<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please note that the different account types have different requirements and options. These are listed in the tables below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After successfully opening a securities account, you can independently upgrade a cash account to a margin account in your account management (Client Portal). It is also possible to downgrade from a margin account to a cash account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maintenance and Initial Margin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In order to enter into a securities transaction on the stock exchange, the initial margin must be deposited in a margin account. In order to be able to hold this security after the end of the regular trading period, the minimum margin (maintenance margin) must be deposited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amount of the minimum margin (maintenance margin) is determined by the exchange. The amount of the minimum margin depends on numerous factors such as volatility, the news situation, the value of the company and many other influencing factors. The initial margin consists of the maintenance margin and a risk premium of the broker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The risk premium is added up, as the broker must hold the loss in the worst case - i.e. in the event of a margin call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
