The benchmark is always the valuation in&nbsp;<strong>EUR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is about <strong>not<\/strong> price gains or currency fluctuations from shares or ETFs in foreign currency - these appear in the respective securities category (e.g. \u201eShares\", \u201eETF\").<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The foreign currency category only considers pure currency trades <strong>in the cash balance<\/strong> (e.g. USD, CHF, GBP).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"wann-entsteht-ein-fremdw-hrungstrade-\">When does a foreign currency trade arise?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"er-ffnung-eines-w-hrungstrades\">Opening a currency trade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A currency trade is opened as soon as the&nbsp;<strong>Cash balance of a non-EUR currency<\/strong>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<strong>0 moved away<\/strong>&nbsp;- in both directions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Long opening:<\/strong> You buy the foreign currency.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Example 1: EUR \u2192 USD exchanged, your USD balance goes from 0 to <strong>+10,000 USD<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Example 2: You sell US shares \u2192 This gives you USD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Short opening:<\/strong> They \u201eborrow\" the foreign currency, e.g. by buying US shares on margin without first holding USD.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Example: Purchase of US equities, USD balance goes from 0 to <strong>-10,000 USD<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"schlie-ung-eines-w-hrungstrades\">Closing a currency trade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A foreign currency trade (or part of it) is closed when the same balance is&nbsp;<strong>Moves towards 0<\/strong>&nbsp;- whether complete or only partial and for whatever reason:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conversion from USD to EUR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purchase of securities in this currency (consumes a long balance)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sale of securities or dividends in this currency (reduces a short balance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between the time of opening and closing, the&nbsp;<strong>Realized currency gain or loss<\/strong>.
