US weekly outlook: Powell delivers - NVIDIA in focus

The new trading week is likely to focus in particular on the quarterly figures from chip manufacturer NVIDIA. Following the central bankers' meeting in Jackson Hole and investors' associated interest rate cut fantasies, US monetary policy is also likely to remain an issue. New US price data in particular could provide important impetus.

Jerome Powell gives go-ahead for possible interest rate cut at central bankers' meeting in Jackson Hole

"The time has come to adjust monetary policy", Powell said last Friday at the annual meeting of the most important monetary authorities in the US state of Wyoming. According to the head of the central bank, the inflation risks had decreased, meaning that the time had come for interest rate cuts. Consequently, the direction of monetary policy is clear, but the amount and sequence of further interest rate cuts are not fixed and will depend on the development of economic data, among other things.
"My confidence has grown that inflation is on a sustainable path back to two percent," it said. In July, the inflation rate was 2.9 percent, which is still well above the actual target of 2.0 percent.

US data likely to provide important impetus - Fed representatives again in focus

New data on durable goods orders is likely to reveal the current situation on Monday afternoon (14:30). As these goods are generally associated with higher spending, they can provide an important indication of the US economy.

Following the economic symposium in Jackson Hole, speeches by Fed representatives are again on the agenda this week. According to the schedule, Governor Christopher Waller will address the public on Tuesday morning (07:15).

Consumer confidence from the Conference Board (CB) will be in focus on Tuesday at 16:00.

Raphael Bostic from the Atlanta Fed will be speaking on Wednesday night (00:00) and late Thursday evening (21:30).

As in previous weeks, initial claims for US unemployment benefits are also likely to be important (14:30), after a strangely weak US labor market report at the beginning of the month heightened concerns about recession and sent stock markets around the world into a tailspin.

US price data rounds off the trading week - NVIDIA could decide the weal and woe

One of the most important economic data is likely to be the so-called "PCE deflator" for personal consumption expenditure on Friday afternoon at 14:30, which can be seen as an important indicator of future inflation trends.

New figures on Michigan consumer confidence round off the trading week (16:00).

In the midweek reporting season, investors will be focusing in particular on NVIDIA's figures, which will be published after the US stock market closes. In addition to the US giant, Salesforce will also be reporting. On Thursday, Dell Technologies will present its business figures for the past quarter.
