Caught between geopolitical flashpoints, interest rate questions, and doubts about AI, investors currently lack a clear guiding thread. Wall Street could remain trapped in the tension of an uncertainty cocktail made up of geopolitical risks, monetary policy question marks, and AI concerns. The oil price is currently acting as a pulse monitor for investors' nerves. With every further surge in oil prices, the concern grows that inflation could be fueled and central banks could be pressured to act. Anyone currently looking for orientation in the markets will primarily find new question marks. In this trading week, investors are focusing in particular on the Fed's key interest rate decision on Wednesday evening.

US retail sales and Fed rate decision in focus on Wednesday

On Wednesday, US retail sales will first come into focus (2:30 PM). Economists expect an increase of 0.9 percent compared to the previous month, after said sales had previously declined by 0.6 percent in the comparison month.

The Fed's key interest rate decision is scheduled for 8:00 PM, followed by the FOMC press conference with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at 8:30 PM.

Meanwhile, 86.5 percent of market participants (according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool) expect a 25 basis point interest rate hike, and only 13.5 percent expect a rate pause. A month ago, 66.9 percent had expected the latter scenario.
