Meeting in Oman canceled at the last minute – Geopolitical concerns remain present
The meeting originally planned in Oman with representatives of the Gulf states regarding a potential solution concerning the Strait of Hormuz was canceled at the last minute. "Saudi Arabia requested that this meeting not take place," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai. Last week, the Houthis, who are allied with Iran, had advanced toward the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
US retail sales and Fed rate decision in focus on Wednesday
On Wednesday, US retail sales will first come into focus (2:30 PM). Economists expect an increase of 0.9 percent compared to the previous month, after said sales had previously declined by 0.6 percent in the comparison month.
The Fed's key interest rate decision is scheduled for 8:00 PM, followed by the FOMC press conference with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at 8:30 PM.
Meanwhile, 86.5 percent of market participants (according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool) expect a 25 basis point interest rate hike, and only 13.5 percent expect a rate pause. A month ago, 66.9 percent had expected the latter scenario.
