Dow Jones Forecast & Analysis: Dow Jones stronger than the rest

A stock market chart that shows the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index from May 2021 to August 2022 and automatically integrates candlestick patterns, volume bars, Bollinger bands, support/resistance levels and a 200-day moving average.

Dear trader, dear stock market friends.

While the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 ended the week on a negative note, the Dow Jones closed last week with a gain of 0.8 %. After the correction continued in the first half of the week, the Dow Jones stabilized on Thursday and went into the weekend on Friday with a price rally of 654 points or 1.6 %.

PCE price index in line with expectations

In terms of economic data from the US, the focus on Thursday was initially on the publication of gross domestic product (GDP) for the past second quarter. At 2.8 %, GDP was well above the expected figure of 2.0 %.

The PCE price index was published on Friday. The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index is an important indicator of inflation in the USA. It measures changes in the price of goods and services purchased by households for consumption purposes. While the core PCE rate of 2.6 % was published slightly above expectations of 2.5 %, the overall PCE index on a year-on-year (YOY) basis was exactly in line with expectations at 2.5 %, as was the month-on-month figure of 0.1 %.

The inflation data caused Wall Street to breathe a sigh of relief and increased confidence that nothing stands in the way of the Fed's expected interest rate turnaround. According to the CME Group's FedWatch tool, the market is now even expecting three interest rate hikes this year. This would mean a rate cut of 25 basis points at each of the three remaining Fed meetings in September, November and December. At the meeting on Wednesday of this week (July 31), the key interest rate is very likely to remain unchanged.

Dow Jones tests breakout level

The breakout above the 40,000-point mark in July was followed by a rally that pushed the Dow Jones up to 41,376 points. The previous resistance area reversed its function after the breakout and now serves as chart support. Last week, the correction ended almost exactly at the horizontal support at around 40,000 points before the Dow rose again. It is now important that this support area holds. If the support area is broken in a bearish direction in the next few days, there is a risk of further price losses. The next short-term resistance area on the upside is in the range of the all-time highs between 41,200 and 41,400 points

Dow Jones Transportation Index: Breakout is a long time coming

While the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 have already reached several all-time highs this year, the Dow Jones Transportation Index has lagged somewhat behind. From a market breadth perspective, a breakout and the development of relative strength in the transportation index would be another important trend-confirming signal. The transportation index also showed strength on Thursday and Friday. The fact that the downtrend of the relative strength line between the Dow Jones Transportation Average and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was recently broken and the transportation index appears to be at least trying to build relative strength since June is also a cautiously optimistic signal. However, in order for the transportation index to confirm the breakout of the industrial index, it is imperative that the transportation index breaks above the resistance area at 16,200 - 16,300 points. If it succeeds, this would be a very positive signal, not only for the Dow Jones, but also for the bull market as a whole.
