Positive corporate results boost DAX

A DAX index chart showing an uptrend with support and resistance levels, highlighted zones and moving averages. The X-axis shows data from 2022 to 2025.

Dear traders, dear stock market friends.

The DAX has only known one direction so far this year: upwards. Since the beginning of the year, the leading German index is already up 13.3%, signaling clear relative strength. In comparison, the S&P 500 is currently up just 1.2% on a YTD basis, while the Nasdaq 100 is even slightly down.

DAX breaks out of trend channel

You can see how strong the upward momentum in the DAX currently is by looking at the following weekly chart. Since the low at the end of 2022, the DAX has been moving upwards within a trend channel. The upper trend channel line has repeatedly acted as resistance, at which the index ended its upward movement and entered a consolidation phase. In January, the DAX even broke through this trend channel to the upside and peaked at 22,935 points.

Positive quarterly results provide a tailwind

The reporting season for DAX companies was largely positive. Many company results were better than expected and helped the DAX reach new highs

SAP exceeds expectations

SAP, for example, reported an unexpectedly good final quarter of 2024. The software group exceeded market expectations and raised its profit forecast for 2025 - supported by a booming cloud business and high demand for AI-related software solutions. SAP now expects an operating result of EUR 10.3 - 10.6 billion for 2025. A 32% increase in orders was achieved in the cloud segment. As SAP has a very high weighting in the index with a market capitalization of more than 300 billion euros, the development of the SAP share was and is an important driver for the positive performance of the DAX.

Munich RE with record profit

Reinsurer Munich Re once again exceeded its targets in 2024 and achieved a record profit of 5.67 billion euros (previous year: 4.60 billion euros). The target of 5 billion euros was thus clearly beaten. Shareholders also benefit from an increased dividend of 20 euros per share, which also boosts confidence in the company and the insurance industry.

Siemens, Deutsche Bank and Telekom

Siemens also reported positive results from the industrial sector. The company recorded growth at the start of the new fiscal year - in Q1 of fiscal year 2025, which ended in January, sales increased by 3 % to 18.4 billion euros.

Deutsche Telekom also delivered robust figures, as did Deutsche Bank, which reported a pre-tax profit of EUR 5.3 billion and is planning distributions totaling EUR 2.1 billion to shareholders.

Sideways trend and cautious outlook for BASF

BASF is not quite so positive about the future. The chemical company is cautiously optimistic about the future and is forecasting slight profit growth of no more than 6 %, despite ongoing cost reductions. In contrast to the market as a whole, BASF shares are currently moving sideways.

Overall, therefore, the positive surprises currently outweigh the negative ones and the strong results of many companies have recently led to a significant improvement in investor sentiment.

MDAX breaks through multi-year resistance

We are currently seeing further positive signals from the mid-cap sector. After the MDAX was unable to participate in the upward trend last year, the mid-cap index has now managed to break out above the important resistance area at around 27,500 points, creating a new upward trend.
