US weekly outlook: "Fed Minutes" and "Jackson Hole" in focus

In the new trading week, investors are likely to continue to process the latest results of the Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in particular. In addition to the eagerly awaited Fed minutes from the last US Federal Reserve meeting, investors should turn their attention to the economic symposium in Jackson Hole, when central bankers and business representatives from around the world will come together.

In the new trading week, investors are likely to continue to process the latest results of the Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in particular.
In addition to the eagerly awaited Fed minutes from the last Fed meeting, investors should turn their attention to the economic symposium in Jackson Hole, when central bankers and business representatives from all over the world come together.

Meeting between Trump and Putin provides little impetus for markets

The meeting between Trump and Putin in the US state of Alaska did not initially produce any real new impetus. Both had spoken of an overall "productive meeting". However, no further details were provided. Market players are now likely to turn their attention to today's meeting between the Ukrainian head of state and the US president at the White House.

High tension ahead of central bankers' meeting in Jackson Hole - Powell speech ahead

Investors on both sides of the Atlantic are likely to be looking forward with great anticipation to the annual central bankers' meeting in Jackson Hole (Wyoming), which could already be casting its shadow. The event will take place from August 21 to 23. The theme is "Changing labor markets: demographics, productivity and macroeconomic policy". It is possible that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell could reveal details about the upcoming Fed meeting in September and thus send out monetary policy signals.

Fed minutes could send monetary policy hints midweek

From an economic calendar perspective, the FOMC minutes, which are expected at 20:00, should be particularly exciting in the middle of the week. Investors should check the transcripts of the latest Fed meeting for monetary policy clues.

Fed speeches and initial claims for US unemployment benefits in focus on Thursday

On Thursday, a Fed speech by Raphael Bostic from the Atlanta-based central bank (13:30) and the weekly initial claims for US unemployment benefits (14:30) could move the markets.

Further speeches by Fed representatives Christopher Waller (17:00) and again by Raphael Bostic (21:00) are expected later in the evening.

The S&P purchasing managers for the services, manufacturing and "total" sectors could also provide impetus on Thursday afternoon (15:45).

Powell speech expected on Friday afternoon - reporting season could also provide impetus

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is also expected to give a speech on Friday afternoon (16:00).

In the reporting season, Thursday's figures from Alibaba (ISIN: US01609W1027) and Walmart (US9311421039) could attract interest.
