Colgate-Palmolive Co. is a global company that manufactures consumer and household products. Its well-known brands include Colgate (toothpaste), Palmolive (liquid soap) and Ajax (washing-up liquid). The company operates in the oral care, personal care, household care and pet food segments and generates most of its sales with oral care products. It sells its products in over 200 countries, with the majority of its business taking place outside the USA, particularly in growth markets such as Latin America, Greater Asia/Africa and Central Europe. The company was founded in 1806 by William Colgate as a retailer of laundry starch, soap and candles. It became a public limited company in 1923 and merged with Palmolive-Peet in 1928 before adopting its current name in 1953.
