Options & writer transactions in the performance report

Options and option writer transactions (short options) are shown in the performance report depending on the Product type and Jurisdiction depicted differently.
The aim is to economic presentation, which Roughly on the tax regulations of the respective jurisdiction without adopting it in full.

Important categories in the report:

  • OPT - „Normal" options transactions (long/short, depending on country)
  • Premium - Option writer premiums (short options) for German clients
  • Worthless - positions that have expired worthless (e.g. certain warrants or options)

Basic principles of mapping

Germany (DE)

For German clients, the performance report is roughly based on the logic of German tax law:

  • Long options (call/put)
    • The P&L of normal long option trades is shown after the sale in the category Options shown.
    • If option positions exercised, the value of the option is usually included in the Cost price of the underlying asset (e.g. the share) are included.
    • A direct profit/loss from the option is then not separate The change in value is shown later in the Sale of the share in der Kategorie „Shares".
  • Short options (option writer transactions)
    • When opening a short option, the customer receives a Premium, which in Germany already at opening is considered economically realized.
    • In the performance report, this premium is shown as „Premium profit" in der Kategorie „Premium" recorded.
    • If a short option is closed out (repurchased), this may result in a Premium loss, which is also in the category „Premium" is shown.
    • If there is a Assignment (allotment/exercise), the original premium profit remains; the shares are recognized at the Strike price booked in.

Result:
The category „Premium" German customers show the Realized P&L from option writer transactions, while long options can be used in other categories (e.g. equities) depending on their performance.

Important: If a short option is held over the turn of the year and then repurchased, the premium gain arises in the old year and the premium loss (repurchase) in the new year.

Austria (AT) and other jurisdictions

  • In the Austrian variant of the performance report, options are uniformly under „OPT" led.
  • The special German distinction between Premium and OPT not applicable.
  • The international report also shows option transactions without the separate premium category.

Typical examples

1. purchased call option (long call), exercised in shares

Initial situation:

  • You buy a Call on one share.
  • The call will be made later exercised, you will receive the share.

Presentation in the performance report (DE logic, simplified):

  • The premium paid for the call flows into the Cost price of the share one.
  • It takes place No separate option gain/loss in the „OPT" category at the exercise date.
  • Only if you sell the share later will the resulting profit/loss appear in the category „Shares", including the option price originally paid.

Consequence: Clients sometimes expect an „option gain" in the report - in many cases this is actually indirectly via the share P&L pictured.

2. purchased put option (long put), worthless expiry

Initial situation:

  • You buy a Put for security and let him expired worthless.

Presentation in the performance report:

  • The option premium paid appears after expiry as a Loss in der Kategorie Worthless.
  • It takes place No transmission to a share position, as no exercise has taken place.

3. writer transaction (short put or short call), no allocation

Initial situation:

  • You write (sell) a Put or Call and receive a bonus.
  • The option is not exercised and expires.

Presentation in the performance report (DE logic):

  • Already at Opening of the short option, the premium amount in the category „Premium" as Profit recorded.
  • If the option expires at a later date, this profit is retained; the option is No further income statement entry.

With a later Smoothing (repurchase of the option), the repurchase amount would be recognized as Premium loss appear in the same category.

4. writer transaction with assignment (e.g. short put, share booked)

Initial situation:

  • You are Writer of a put (short put), receive a premium.
  • The market falls, the put is exercised and you are sold shares. booked in.

Presentation in the performance report (DE logic):

  • The Premium profit remains in the category „Premium" exist.
  • The shares are sold at Strike price The subsequent gain/loss from this share position is recognized in the income statement. separately in the category „Shares".
  • The option P&L is not fully transferred to the shares, unlike in the IB account statement.

In the Austrian variant (AT), the option P&L is typically always transferred to the shares, similar to the account statement. The „Premium" category is omitted there.

Differences to the account statement for options

In the IB account statement option transactions are often presented in such a way that:

  • der Option P&L for Assignment & Exercise transferred in full to the equity position regardless of whether the options are long or short.

In the Performance report (especially for German customers):

  • become Separate option premiums shown,
  • become Long options exercised at the cost price of the underlying is included,
  • the display may differ significantly from the account statement - for identical transactions.

As a result, customers who hold options to the end are partially:

  • hardly see any option P&L in the account statement, for example, because this „migrates" to the share P&L,
  • in the performance report, on the other hand Separate „Premium" category" with realized results from option writer transactions or in the category Worthless find further shares.

Frequently asked questions about options in the performance report

„Why don't I see a profit/loss from my long option in the report?"

  • If your long option exercised the effect is mostly in the Share P&L hidden, not in a separate option line.
  • The P&L typically only appears directly in the option category in the case of worthless expiries or close-outs.

„Why does the performance report show different results than the account statement for short positions?"

  • The performance report for German customers shows the premiums already at opening as realized and displays them separately.
  • In many cases, however, the account statement transfers the option P&L to the share position.
  • Both representations are based on the same transactions, but follow different presentation logics.

„Does the premium logic also apply to Austrian customers?"

  • No. In the Austrian version All options under „OPT" There is no separate premium category.
  • The presentation is based more on the interaction with the account statement.
