FAQ & glossary for the performance report

1. is the performance report an official tax document?

No.
The performance report is a Informative, economic evaluation of your trading activities.
He is Roughly based on tax regulations, but replaces No tax advice and places no tax assessment notice dar.

You should discuss which documents you use in your tax return and how they should be classified with your tax advisor. own tax consultant clarify.

2. why do the figures differ from the IB account statement?

The IB account statement is based on the US system and calculates many results in the Trading currency (e.g. USD).
The Performance report generally calculates profits and losses in EUR, including exchange rate effects.

In addition, certain products - in particular Foreign currencies and Options/tilting transactions - aggregated differently and combined into separate categories.
The figures can therefore differ significantly, although the same transactions are the basis.

Details: see subpage „Differences to the account statement / IB statement".

3. i have never actively traded currencies. Why do I still see foreign currency gains/losses?

A foreign currency trade already begins when the Cash balance a foreign currency (e.g. USD) from 0 moved away, e.g. through:

  • Dividends in USD,
  • Sales of US equities with subsequent holding of the USD balance,
  • Purchases or sales in other foreign currencies.

As soon as this balance is later Direction 0 (e.g. by exchanging them back into EUR or making new purchases), this results in a Realized foreign currency gain/loss.
This is shown in the performance report in the category „Foreign currencies" shown.

Details and calculation example: see subpage „Foreign currencies: Understanding Gains & Losses".

4. why do I not see a separate profit/loss from my long option?

When a Long option (call/put) exercised the option value is often included in the Cost price of the underlying asset (e.g. share) included.
The actual effect then appears not as a separate option P&L, but later in the Share P&L, if you sell the share.

Only if an option expires worthless or Smoothed the income statement typically appears directly in the category „OPT" or a related option category.

Find out more: Underside „Options & option writer transactions".

5 What does the „Premium" category show?

The category „Premium" exists for German customers only and summarizes Short options (short options) together:

  • When a short option is opened, the premium amount is paid as Premium profit recorded.
  • In the event of closing out (repurchase), there may be a Premium loss, also in this category.
  • In the case of assignment, the original premium profit is retained, while the shares are booked separately at the strike price.

Austrian and many international variants, on the other hand, list options uniformly under „OPT", without a separate premium category.

6. can I recalculate the figures in the performance report myself?

Basically yes, but with effort:

  • Use the Transaction section of the IB account statement, in which the original transaction prices in trading currency are listed.
  • You will also need historical exchange rates (e.g. daily closing prices), as the performance report converts buy and sell prices into EUR.
  • On this basis, the euro profit/loss for individual trades can be tracked.

If a tax authority has queries about the Calculation and you use the performance report as proof, CapTrader can - within the limits of what is possible - provide the Explain numerical derivation, without adopting the tax assessment.

7. how should I use the performance report in relation to my tax return?

  • and documents for a meeting with your Tax consultant to prepare.

However, CapTrader offers No tax advice and speaks No recommendation to use the report in a certain way in the tax return.
