VIX at 15, puts for five cents: what teens are doing as crash protection

Am 17. August fiel der VIX auf 14,18, das Jahrestief. Wenige Tage später notierte er bei 15,13, der S&P 500 bei 7.674 Punkten und damit rund 16 Prozent über dem Jahresanfang. Die Jahresspanne im VIX reicht bisher von 14,18 bis rund 35. In einem solchen Umfeld sind weit entfernte Optionen günstig, und damit rückt eine alte Bezeichnung wieder in den Blick: Teenies.

Der Begriff stammt aus der Zeit vor der Dezimalisierung. Optionen unter drei Dollar notierten damals in Sechzehnteln, darüber in Achteln. Ein Sechzehntel Dollar sind 6,25 Cent, tiefer ging der Kurs nicht. Heute steht der Ausdruck für alles am unteren Rand der Preisleiter: Delta 1 oder weniger, Strike weit unter dem Markt, Briefkurs fünf oder zehn Cent. In SPX liegt der kleinste Tick unter drei Dollar bei fünf Cent, in SPY, QQQ und IWM bei einem Cent. Die Grundbegriffe dazu stehen im Glossar zu Optionen.

Verkaufsseite und Kaufseite

Die meisten Stillhalter begegnen Teenies zuerst als Verkaufsposition. Der Put liegt 25 Prozent aus dem Geld, die Geldseite steht bei fünf Cent, dreißig verkaufte Kontrakte bringen 150 Dollar Prämie. Was in dieser Rechnung fehlt, zeigt der 5. August 2024. Der VIX schloss am Freitag davor bei 23, stand vorbörslich am Montag bei 65 und beendete den Tag bei knapp 40. Der Index selbst lag zu diesem Zeitpunkt moderat im Minus. Die Marginanforderungen stiegen über Nacht deutlich, und in den weit entfernten Strikes war kaum Liquidität vorhanden. Bei einem Preis von 3,00 kostet der Rückkauf der dreißig Kontrakte 9.000 Dollar, nach Abzug der Prämie bleibt ein Verlust von 8.850 Dollar. Auf der Kaufseite ist der Verlust begrenzt, dafür gibt es ein anderes Problem. Gekauft wird zum Briefkurs, im Beispiel also zu zehn Cent statt der fünf Cent auf der Geldseite. Der Modellwert dieser Strikes liegt nahe null. Bezahlt wird der Mindesttick plus die Risikoprämie des Market Makers. Damit sind beide Seiten schlecht bepreist: Der Käufer zahlt ein Vielfaches des Modellwerts, der Verkäufer bekommt für ein offenes Sprungrisiko fünf Cent. Die Position taugt als Versicherung, deren Kosten über den Zyklus anfallen.

Normalisierte Vola: 25 Prozent Abstand sind kein fester Abstand

Ein Strike 25 Prozent unter dem Markt klingt nach einer klaren Größe. In Optionspreisen ist er nur so weit entfernt, wie die Volatilität es zulässt. Der brauchbare Maßstab ist der Abstand in Standardabweichungen, abhängig von impliziter Vola und Restlaufzeit.

Die Umrechnung läuft über die Wurzel. Eine Jahresvola wird zur Vola des Zeitraums, indem man sie mit der Wurzel aus dem Zeitanteil multipliziert. Bei VIX 15 und 45 Tagen Restlaufzeit: 0,15 × √(45/365) = 5,27 Prozent. Das ist eine Standardabweichung für diese Periode. Auf Tagesbasis sind es 0,15 / √252 = 0,94 Prozent, bei VIX 45 dagegen 2,83 Prozent. Eine Tagesbewegung von zwei Prozent ist im einen Regime ein Zwei-Sigma-Ereignis und im anderen unauffällig.

Damit wird ein Strike vergleichbar. SPX 7.674, Put mit Strike 5.750, 45 Tage Restlaufzeit:

Bei VIX 15 liegt der Strike 5,5 Sigma entfernt. Bei VIX 30 sind es 2,7 Sigma, bei VIX 45 noch 1,8. Strike und Indexstand sind dabei unverändert. Die rechnerische Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass der Index bei Verfall darunter liegt, steigt von praktisch null über 0,3 Prozent auf 3,4 Prozent.

Der Preis folgt dieser Bewegung nicht linear. Derselbe Put ist bei VIX 15 unter einem Cent wert, bei VIX 30 rund 55 Dollar je Kontrakt und bei VIX 45 knapp 1.290 Dollar, jeweils bei unverändertem Indexstand. Der Sigma-Abstand fällt umgekehrt proportional zur Vola, der Preis reagiert exponentiell.

Was ein gekaufter Teenie im Ernstfall bringt

Zwanzig SPX-Puts zu 0,10 sind 200 Dollar Einsatz. Der Wert der Position hängt an zwei Größen, die im Crash meist gemeinsam laufen.

Fällt der Index zehn Prozent und die IV in diesem Strike steht bei 35, ist der Kontrakt rechnerisch rund 2.100 Dollar wert, die Position also gut 42.000. Bei minus 20 Prozent und IV 50 sind es knapp 23.900 Dollar je Kontrakt. Bleibt die Vola bei 20, bringt derselbe Rutsch um zehn Prozent 50 Dollar je Kontrakt, in Summe 1.000 Dollar. Beide Fälle unterstellen denselben Kursverlust, den Abstand zwischen fünffachem und zweihundertfachem Einsatz macht die Vola. Ein Zehn-Prozent-Rutsch bei unveränderter IV ist am Index selten, die 50 Dollar markieren die untere Grenze.

Daraus folgt der Umgang mit der Position: Sie muss im Stress verkauft werden. Steigt der Index zwei Wochen später wieder, notiert dieselbe Option erneut bei fünf Cent, weil der Skew eingelaufen ist. Eine Absicherung zum Liegenlassen ist das nicht.

Warum die weit entfernten Strikes

Der Grund liegt im Verhältnis von Vega zum Preis. Ein SPX-Put am Geld mit 45 Tagen Restlaufzeit kostet bei IV 15 rund 14.300 Dollar je Kontrakt, ein Vola-Punkt bewegt ihn um etwa 1.070 Dollar. Das sind 7,5 Prozent seines Preises. Der 5.750er kostet bei IV 30 rund 55 Dollar, ein Vola-Punkt bringt dort 19 Dollar, also gut 34 Prozent. Je eingesetztem Dollar liegt die Vola-Sensitivität weit außen damit mehrfach höher. Der Vergleich gilt für IV 30 in diesem Strike, also nach dem ersten Vola-Anstieg. Am Einstiegspunkt bei VIX 15 ist das Vega dort noch nahe null, und den Preis von zehn Cent bestimmen Mindesttick und Risikoprämie.

Dazu kommt der Skew. Im Stress steigt die implizite Vola der tiefen Puts stärker als die am Geld, die Kurve wird höher und steiler. Der weit entfernte Strike hat damit ein Vola-Beta über eins und profitiert überproportional von dieser Neubewertung. Der dritte Punkt ist die Kapitalbindung. 200 Dollar für zwanzig Teenies binden keine Margin, die das Short-Vola-Buch benötigt. Ein Put am Geld kostet je Kontrakt etwa das Fünffache des Jahresaufwands einer Teenie-Position und bringt im moderaten Rücksetzer wenig, weil er dort schon weitgehend bezahlt ist.

Was der Schutz pro Jahr kostet

Die relevante Größe ist der Jahresaufwand. Zwanzig Kontrakte zu 0,10, alle 30 Tage neu gekauft, sind 200 Dollar pro Rolle und 2.400 Dollar im Jahr. Dazu kommen die Ordergebühren, die hier prozentual stark ins Gewicht fallen: Bei einem Dollar pro Kontrakt sind es auf 240 Kontrakte im Jahr weitere 240 Dollar, also zehn Prozent Aufschlag auf die Prämie. In Summe rund 2.640 Dollar. Auf ein Depot von 250.000 Dollar entspricht das 1,06 Prozent Rendite pro Jahr. Die für euren Handelsplatz gültigen Sätze stehen in den Konditionen zum Optionshandel.

Dazu der Spread. In den weit entfernten Strikes steht häufig null auf der Geldseite und zehn Cent im Brief. Der Mittelkurs liegt damit bei fünf Cent: Wer den Brief zahlt, steht sofort 50 Prozent darunter, und zum Geldkurs ist die Position nichts wert. Limit-Order ist hier Pflicht. VIX-Calls: Preisgrundlage ist der Future

Der zweite gängige Weg läuft über VIX-Calls. Strike 60 für ein paar Cent, und im März 2020 stand der VIX über 80. Entscheidend ist dabei die Konstruktion: Preisgrundlage einer VIX-Option ist der VIX-Future des jeweiligen Verfalls. Der Spot-VIX kommt in der Rechnung nicht vor, und der Future handelt in ruhigen Phasen über dem Spot. Die aktuelle Kurve zeigt das deutlich. Bloomberg berichtete am 25. August von 17,4 im September-Future, 19 im Oktober und 19,7 im November, während der Spot bei gut 15 lag. Der Aufschlag für die Zwischenwahlen im November ist damit eingepreist. Wer heute einen November-Call kauft, bezahlt die 19,7. Die Ausgangslage liegt rund 30 Prozent über dem, was der VIX-Stand vermuten lässt.

Der 5. August 2024 zeigt den zweiten Teil des Problems. Während der Spot-VIX vorbörslich über 65 sprang, blieb der Front-Month-Future unter 35. Ein Arbeitspapier der SEC-Forschungsabteilung hat diese Divergenz später im Detail untersucht. Wer VIX-Calls im Depot hatte, erhielt einen Bruchteil dessen, was der Spot-Stand nahelegte. Dazu kommt die Ausgestaltung: VIX-Optionen sind europäisch, vorzeitig ausüben ist also nicht möglich. Am Verfallstag wird gegen den Abrechnungswert VRO in Cash abgerechnet, vorher bleibt der Verkauf. 2024 hielt der Extremwert von 65 nur wenige Stunden, brauchbare Preise gab es einige Tage.

Vor dem ersten Kontrakt

Zwei Punkte gehören vorher festgelegt.

Erstens die Ausstiegsregel in Zahlen. Beispiel: Hälfte verkaufen, wenn die Position beim Zehnfachen steht, Rest, wenn der Front-Month-Future über 30 handelt. Ohne vorher definierte Schwelle fällt die Entscheidung mitten in eine Phase mit hoher Unsicherheit und schlechter Liquidität.

Zweitens das Jahresbudget in Prozent des Depots. Ein Prozent pro Jahr ist eine handhabbare Größe. Sie legt die Kontraktzahl fest und verhindert, dass die Position in ruhigen Phasen mitwächst, weil die Prämien gerade niedrig sind.

Für Stillhalter kommt eine dritte Möglichkeit dazu: die Positionsgröße reduzieren. Ein Delta-15-Put weniger zu verkaufen kostet die entgangene Prämie und verlangt keine laufende Zahlung. Ein um ein Viertel kleineres Short-Vola-Buch erreicht in vielen Szenarien einen Teil der Wirkung eines gekauften Teenies, ohne die 1,06 Prozent im Jahr.

Eine Handelsidee, die beides verbindet, ist der Ratio-Aufbau: einen Teil der Prämie aus dem verkauften Delta-15-Put in zwei oder drei lange Teenies weiter unten investieren. Das ist ein Put-Ratio-Spread mit den entsprechenden Eigenschaften. Zwischen den Strikes bleibt Risiko offen, die Margin richtet sich nach dem Short-Leg, und unterhalb des Short-Strikes verbessert sich das Bild erst bei einem größeren Rückgang. Das Kontofenster der Trader Workstation zeigt die Anforderung in Echtzeit. Rechnet das Szenario für minus 15 Prozent durch, bevor die Position eingebucht wird.

Der VIX steht bei 15, die Kurve hat den November-Aufschlag eingepreist, und der günstigste Teil der Terminstruktur liegt im September.

Conclusion

Teenies wirken über die Volatilität, der Strike allein trägt die Position nicht: derselbe Put ist bei VIX 15 unter einem Cent wert und bei VIX 45 knapp 1.290 Dollar, ohne dass sich der Index bewegt. Bezahlt wird dieser Schutz laufend, im Rechenbeispiel mit rund 1 Prozent Depotrendite pro Jahr inklusive Gebühren. Bei VIX-Calls kommt der Aufschlag der Terminstruktur dazu, aktuell 19,7 im November gegen 15 im Spot. Wer die Position aufbaut, legt Jahresbudget und Ausstiegsschwelle vorher fest, weil der Gewinn nur durch einen Verkauf im Stress realisiert wird. Für Stillhalter bleibt die kleinere Position die günstigere Alternative, solange die Prämien so dünn sind wie derzeit.
