Options trading with the MicroStrategy share: "Cash Secured Puts"

The crypto world has changed noticeably following Donald Trump's re-election as US President. The prospect of a crypto-friendly Washington and the already signed decree to introduce a cryptocurrency reserve in the United States have given the industry additional acceptance and therefore respectability. However, the escalation of the trade dispute between the United States and major economies such as China or the EU has significantly impacted risky and interest-free investments in the first months of 2025. MicroStrategy shares (ISIN: US5949724083) were also unable to escape Bitcoin's kinship in the first quarter of the year.

However, since the beginning of the second quarter of 2025, crypto stocks have experienced a recovery, which has also benefited crypto-sensitive stocks such as MicroStrategy in this context.

While MicroStrategy shares (MSTR) already gained around 32% in April, Bitcoin (BTC), the crypto asset by market size, rose by around 11% in the same period. From the beginning to the end of June, Bitcoin gained a further 13%, while MSTR shares recorded an increase of around 6.50%.

In addition to signs of easing in the trade dispute, increasing institutional interest in particular is likely to have triggered a recovery from a fundamental perspective.

Introduction to the Cash Secured Put strategy

With the option strategy "Cash Secured Put"With a strike option, you acquire a certain share at a fixed price if the price falls to or below the strike price on a certain date. In return, you receive an option premium. However, if the option is exercised, you are obliged to buy the shares. The term "cash secured" means that the potential share purchase is secured with liquid funds.

This strategy could be suitable for investors who would like to include a particular share in their portfolio but are waiting for a more favorable entry price. The option premium also generates additional income - even if a purchase is never made.

MicroStrategy is considered the largest publicly traded company owned by Bitcoin

MicroStrategy owns a total of 597,325 Bitcoin (BTC) (as at June 2025), making it the largest listed company in the world to own Bitcoin. In this context, MSTR is likely to remain dependent not least on the development of the Bitcoin price.

MicroStrategy has been consistently pursuing a Bitcoin strategy since 2020. In the first quarter of 2025, the company bought 301,335 BTC worth 21 billion dollars to further increase its positions.

Despite an unrealized loss of $5.91 billion in the first three months of 2025, MicroStrategy remains confident and plans to further increase its holdings of BTC.

Conclusion

Donald Trump has reshuffled the cards on the crypto market and thus strongly influenced the associated landscape through his re-election as US President. The Republican has now been in office for around five and a half months. At the end of the day, the advance praise he bestowed on the crypto sector during his election campaign will have to come true. Even though the introduction of a cryptocurrency reserve has already been initiated by decree, the announcement of the active purchase of crypto assets using taxpayers' money, for example, has failed to materialize, which was seen as a disappointment. Last but not least, the escalating trade dispute in the spring has also significantly dampened investors' risk aversion. Despite the emerging signs of easing, the customs conflict acts as a classic sword of Damocles and therefore a major uncertainty factor for the market.

From a fundamental perspective, however, the continued prospect of a friendly regulatory market environment in the United States in particular could act as a driving force. The potential increase in interest from major banks could also be a decisive factor in the coming weeks and months.

One option strategy could be the so-called "cash secured put", where you hedge the trade with cash.

In this context, an option is sold, making the investor a writer. As a rule, investors use this strategy if they are prepared to acquire the share at a lower price and ultimately buy it if the price falls below the strike price.

In view of the high dependency on the Bitcoin price, investors should bear in mind the comparatively high volatility and, in this context, the pronounced risk of loss. In this context, the trading strategy must be put through its paces at all times and adjusted if necessary, and the associated risks must be kept in mind at all times.
